Job Description: Controller

 

Overall Responsibility:

 

The Controller at Camp Eight Capital is multi-faceted role taking ownership and leadership of the financial health of our company. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, direct and indirect oversight of financial reporting, financial analysis, budgeting, treasury management, compliance, account receivable and payable, payroll, and other accounting and reporting functions of the business. The Controller is tasked to identify, envision, and champion best practices for reporting and controls. Additionally, s/he is responsible for engagement with key stakeholders internally and externally including third party tax and audit partners.

 

The ideal candidate will have experience as an accountant in the real estate development and/or management industry, preferably in a senior role, comfortable in a fast-growing, entrepreneurial environment. As a strong communicator and skilled financial analyst, the Controller will optimize our financial reporting and accounting processes. The Controller will also produce analysis to improve our operational efficiency and aid in our continued growth. The Controller must be a self-starter, self-sufficient, and thrive in a setting where systems can be imnproved and created alongside the company's growth.

 

The position reports directly to David Gefsky, Founder and Managing Principal of Camp Eight Capital.

 

Essential Functions:

 

  • Manage all aspects of accounting, billing, financial statements, general ledger, cost accounting, payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, budgeting, tax compliance, revenue recognition, and various special analysis
  • Oversees production of comprehensive financial reports by evaluating, analyzing, and reporting on the financial health of the business and various investments
  • Oversee and support accounting team to produce consistent financial reports
  • Develop, implement, and maintain financial controls and guidelines; maintain documented system of accounting policies and operations; maintain internal control safeguards for the receipt of revenue, expenses, and various property level and management tier budgets and actual expenditures
  • Ensure all accounts are paid on time
  • Oversee all payments made for debts, bank loans, and other large quantities of money
  • Monitor cash and funding balances including internal and lender reserves for investments
  • Keep an organized filing system of all accounts, statements, transactions, payments, debts, and other important business information
  • Prepare and organize monthly, quarterly and yearly financial statements for investors and lenders
  • Manage the quarterly/annual budgets and forecasts for property level and corporate level reports
  • Advise on financial analyses and decision-making regarding capital investments
  • Organize information and statements for audits and both internal and external auditors, when applicable
  • Define, benchmark, and implement operational best practices
  • Comply with all local, state, and federal laws regarding finances, tax filings, regulations, and reporting
  • Work closely with asset management and property management teams on various accounting related requirements and corporate matters
  • Ensure equitable system of cost allocations and tracking over shared business units
  • Work with internal and external stakeholders (including lenders, tax and audit partners) to prepare necessary financial reports
  • Perform related duties as necessary or assigned

Required Skills, Experience, and Education:

 

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business administration with an emphasis in Accounting, or a related field
  • Minimum of 10 years of hands-on real estate accounting experience preferably with multi-family and commercial expertise. Previous experience as an accountant, accounting supervisor, or manager
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) license required
  • Demonstrable series of accomplishments indicating increased responsibility and performance in a broad array of financial and accounting roles and responsibilities
  • Strong understanding of banking processes
  • Excellent computer skills; experience in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite; Access, database, or other system knowledge
  • Proficiency with accounting software and experience with a software system implementation
  • Exceptional knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting, cost accounting and cost control principles, and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Analytical ability to develop and implement improvements or recommendations
  • Attention to detail
  • Rigorous work ethic and pride in work. Demonstrable track record of success in prior work settings
  • Able to work well with senior executives and team, as well as mentor/lead/build accounting team
