Grounds Keeper
Job Description
Basic Function: To provide general facilities support for the Grounds Department
Reports to: Grounds Supervisor
FLSA Status: Non-exempt
Essential Duties:
- Oversees the maintenance and care for school grounds and turf
- Mows and trims all lawn areas
- Pulls weeds by hand or uses “weed wacker” as appropriate
- Inspects flowers, shrubs, trees, lawns, and turf for evidence of insects, fungi, and other pests
- Mows school grounds and athletic fields with hand and power mowers; prunes trees and trims hedges to promote growth and improve appearance
- Responsible for daily upkeep of the property and grounds which includes cleaning and removing of trash
- Spreads salt on public passageways to prevent ice buildup
- Responsible for maintaining the required property uniform and ensuring a professional appearance and attitude at all times
- Applies fertilizers and weed control chemicals in compliance with Georgia law
- Maintains, repairs and connects sprinkling equipment and waters lawns, athletic fields, and flower beds
- Adjusts and repairs such equipment as lawnmowers, sprinklers, and lawn equipment
- Repairs components of outdoor facilities, i.e. bleachers and fences, in the baseball and football stadium
- Handles emergency situations that might occur
- Other duties as assigned by Director of Grounds
- Contributes positively to team morale, maintaining a positive, pleasant demeanor
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Proficiency in lawn management preferred
- Necessary state licenses for application of pesticides preferred
Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
- Regularly operates a variety of power tools and equipment
- May climb ladders to roof tops
- Must be able to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs. while using proper lifting techniques
- Regularly uses close and distance vision
- Works in a wide variety of environments, in all areas of the school
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; extreme cold and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
